Sis time in Inglisch!
Well ...
It's a story about London, Magic, Gods, Apocalypses, Krakens and London. Very much into local patriotism about London. The heroes avoid places outside London at any costs.
The confusing host of heroes varies a lot, it grows and shrinks throughout the plot. It is relatively confusing to read but obviously so it was for the author to write.
The web of the story tends to dissolve into single threads and towards the end the author frantically tries to put all these threads together again to compose a finishing. He manages to make it shiny but all in all it feels threadbare. But still a happy ending whatsoever.
The language is very english, londonish or whatever it might be called. The plot, syntax and language are designed to give the story a magic sparkling. But to see the magic in it you should have to be a Londoner or at least english I presume. For someone who has no personal affiliation to this magical kingdom this depiction of London sounds like a bad replica of Dickens'.
Something between fantasy and steampunk, too much local patriotism, too confused. All in all it might be worth reading for Londoners or Mieville's fans but I think it wasn't worth the time reading it.
Don't buy, borrow and give it back.
